HYDROTHERAPY

Canine hydrotherapy is a low-impact, water-based therapy designed to aid dogs in recovering from injury, manage chronic conditions, and improve overall mobility.

Using either a hydrotherapy pool or an underwater treadmill, and benefiting from the therapeutic properties of water, dogs are able to exercise in a supportive environment that help to alleviate joint stress. Under the guidance of a trained hydrotherapist, each dog's health status and movement are continually assessed to ensure safe, effective support. The hydrotherapist provides gentle assistance and guidance to help your dog swim confidently and achieve optimal outcomes.

The hydrotherapist takes time to ensure your dog feels comfortable and at ease, fostering a bond that encourages trust. Allowing the dog to engage at their own pace and offering them choices during sessions promotes a sense of control. This approach enhances the proprioceptive feedback received from the treatment techniques and contributes to better results and progression.

Before and after each session, your dog will be showered. Pre-treatment showering removes debris from the coat, warms up the muscles, and prepares the dog for therapy.  Specific showering techniques are used to integrate this process into the treatment, further enriching the proprioceptive experience. After the session, the shower helps to rinse away any residual chemicals from the sanitised water and maintain muscle warmth for as long as possible. This post-treatment process also provides additional proprioceptive benefits through the drying phase.

Properties of water and their benefits:

Temperature – Warm water which is heated to between 29-23 degrees Celsius is used for hydrotherapy.  The warm water promotes muscle relaxation, improves blood flow and flexibility and helps to reduce pain and muscle spasms.

Buoyancy – the upward force that water exerts on the body, reducing the effects of gravity.   It reduces weight bearing on sore joints, helping to reduce pain and impact during movement.

Hydrostatic pressure – the pressure exerted by water on surfaces of a submerged body.  It aids in reducing swelling and inflammation.  It helps to support circulation and lymphatic drainage by increasing blood flow to an area.

Viscosity and resistance – water is thicker than air, creating resistance to movement. This helps to build strength and muscle tone without stress on the joints. This will help with both cardiovascular fitness and building muscle.

Benefits of hydrotherapy

Pain relief

Warm water relaxes muscles and increases blood flow, helping dogs feel more comfortable and able to move more freely.

Increase mobility

Buoyancy and warmth allow for easier movement, helping stiff or injured dogs regain range of motion and reducing discomfort.

Muscle strengthening

Resistance helps to build muscle mass and strength, helping those dogs recovering from surgery or with long term conditions like arthritis.

Weight management

A great low-impact option for overweight dogs – burning calories without stressing joints.

Rehabilitation support

Accelerates recovery from surgeries such as cruciate ligament repair, spinal issues and orthopaedic injuries.

Improved circulation

Increased blood flow and circulation will assist in supplying muscles with oxygen and removing toxins to facilitate the muscle recovery.

Cardiovascular fitness

Increases heart rate and lung function, improving overall endurance and energy levels.

Mental wellbeing

For dogs with reduced mobility, it can provide a place of enrichment and stimulation they may lack on land due to reduce movement or pain.

Increased quality of life

Ongoing hydrotherapy for chronic conditions can help to reduce pain, leading to an improved quality of life.
